The History of Swiss Spice

About 10 years ago, the inventor and designer Wietlisbach was travelling around New Zealand. He kept his salt in a film canister. Click! The lid popped off the canister and shortly after the salt had run all over his luggage.

This experience was the cause for developing a safe and hygienic container during the following years. The first prototype was made of aluminium; extremely strong, but the weight was a problem. A solution using advanced materials was then pursued. Finding the right advanced plastic (no acrylic) was found to be a big problem. But working together with a Swiss expert from an industrially driven Institution for Technology and Research, an optimal solution finally was found.

Thanks to a lot of Swiss Alpine members, the following test phase was conducted during the next two years in the entire Swiss Alpine panorama.  After this thorough testing, the decision was made to market the product.  Since Swiss Spice had also been on the Matterhorn countless times, the first packaging was created with a picture of this grand and famous Swiss mountain.

Today, Swiss Spice has reached even some of the furthest outposts of our planet. Martin Fickweiler has taken it onto the “Great Wall”; Wilco de Rooij was on the Friesche Vlag Breaker Everest Expedition with Swiss Spice in 2004; Marc Cornelissen took it to a Polartrack and Hans Vermeulen on the Eneco Everest Expedition. Swiss Spice functioned perfectly on its many journeys to these remote areas of the world.

In March of 2007, Swiss Spice was recognized for its superior design by the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum, part of the Smithsonian Institute.
